Children travelling alone

At airBaltic, we want your child to have a safe and smooth journey when travelling without a parent.

Planning your flight

Who can travel alone?

  • Children aged 12–17 may travel alone. The Unaccompanied Minor Service is optional.
  • Children under 12 years old cannot travel alone. They must either:
    • Travel with someone who is at least 16 years old, or
    • Use the Unaccompanied Minor Service (mandatory for children aged 5–11).

What is the Unaccompanied Minor Service?

This service is for children aged 5 and up (if allowed by local law). It means:

  • airBaltic staff will take care of your child from check-in to arrival.
  • Up to 10 unaccompanied children are allowed on each flight.

How to book a ticket and the Unaccompanied Minor Service?

  • If your child is under 12, you must book a ticket by contacting our Call Centre (online booking is not available). The Unaccompanied Minor Service must be booked and paid for in advance online or at a ticket office.
  • The Unaccompanied Minor Service costs:
    • €60 one-way (direct flight)
    • €80 one-way (connecting flight through Riga — transfer time must be under 5 hours)
    • The fee is non-refundable

What to bring

Your child needs:

  • A valid passport or ID
  • A visa, if needed
  • Special permission from parents if required by your country’s laws. For more information, please check Travel documents for minors.
  • If you use the Unaccompanied Minor Service, you need to fill out, print and sign 5 copies of the service form before arriving at the airport. In the form, provide full details of the person meeting your child at their destination.

Important: some countries have special rules

  • Romania: Romanian citizens under 18 must use the Unaccompanied Minor Service and have a notarized permission letter when flying from Romania.
  • Albania: Albanian citizens under 18 must use the Unaccompanied Minor Service when flying from Albania.
  • Moldova: The Unaccompanied Minor Service is not available for Moldovan citizens.
  • Italy: Italian citizens under 14 must have Unaccompanied Minor Service and need a special form called Dichiarazione di affido when flying from Italy.

NB! These rules only apply to airBaltic flights. If your child is flying with another airline, different rules and fees may apply — please check with that airline directly.

At the airport

What parents need to do at departure

  • If you booked the Unaccompanied Minor Service but didn’t fill out and print the form at home, please do it at the airport ticket office or check-in.
  • Stay at the airport until the plane has taken off.
  • In some cities, you must escort the child to the gate: Riga, Düsseldorf, Munich, Frankfurt, Hamburg, Stuttgart, Hannover, Berlin (only for flights within the Schengen area). In this case:
    • You must show your passport or ID to get a special entry pass at check-in.
    • You’ll go through regular security checks.

During the flight

Once onboard, your child will be looked after by our cabin crew.

We’ll help with:

  • Finding their seat
  • Putting away their bag
  • Feeling comfortable during the flight

Crew cannot help with personal care or giving medicine. Please make sure your child is able to travel alone safely.

Please note: we kindly ask you to prepare takeaway food, water, and other necessary items before the flight. Only cashless payments are accepted on board.

After the flight

  • The airport staff will meet your child at the aircraft door.
  • They will guide them through the airport to the arrival hall.
  • Your child will be handed over to the designated person, who must:
    • Be listed on the Service form
    • Arrive on time
    • Show a valid passport or ID

Connecting flights?

No problem. The airport staff will escort your child to the next gate and make sure they get on their next flight.
